Outdoor furniture retailers are opening stores in the United States and India in a sign of growing confidence in the region.
The companies said they expect to sell about $1 billion worth of outdoor furniture in the next five years.
The first of the new stores is set to open in Seattle’s Pioneer Square on Friday, followed by locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta.
The U.S. market is a key driver for outdoor furniture makers, with more than $300 billion in sales last year, according to research firm IBISWorld.
The Indian market is expected to be the second largest.
Indian retailers are also moving into outdoor furniture, with several new stores opening in the past few months, including the new Indiatimes store in Delhi.
The store has been selling furniture and accessories, such as camping tents and tarps, as well as sport equipment.
The stores are expected to draw shoppers from across the country.
India’s consumer spending on outdoor furniture is expected hit a five-year low last year after falling for six straight years, according the World Bank.
In the second quarter, outdoor furniture sales fell 0.2 percent, while indoor furniture sales rose 0.4 percent, according data compiled by Bloomberg.
Indiatimes, which is owned by Vodafone India Plc, said the Indian store is the largest outdoor furniture retailer in the world and the company has more than 1,000 stores across the globe.
The company has said it expects to sell $1.5 billion worth in outdoor furniture this year, a big jump from last year.
Chinese retail stocks are also expanding rapidly, with online retailer Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
expanding its presence in India by buying out an online platform for buying and selling furniture online.
Alibaba is also working on a new furniture service that will allow customers to purchase and sell furniture from the platform.
