After the FA Cup Final was abandoned on Sunday after being postponed due to an accident, Chelsea were handed a 2-0 win over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
It was Chelsea’s first victory in the competition since the final against Liverpool in November 2008.
It’s the third time the two sides have met this season, with the Premier League champions winning 4-1 at Anfield in October.
Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce said his side were disappointed not to have won the cup.
“It was a difficult game,” he said.
“We played well and we defended well, we made mistakes and we scored the goals.”
But I am disappointed not for the FA but for the players.
“When you are playing at this level you can’t expect everything to go your way every game.”
So we just have to concentrate on our football and try to find a way through and we can do that.
“Sunderlands’ players celebrated with a bottle of champagne after the game.
Former England midfielder John Terry tweeted: “It was the FA cup final, a big game for all involved and it’s been a while since I’ve seen a winner like this.”
Chelsea are currently in fifth place in the Premier Leagues table with 10 points from five matches.
They are third in the league with six points, four behind second-placed Arsenal.
Swansea’s defeat at Liverpool saw them drop back to fourth.
Chelsea will play West Bromwich Albion at Wembley on Saturday, a game that will be postponed until Saturday evening as part of the FA’s new Match of the Day programme.
Sungu van Zyl’s Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
